Welcome to Seaspray

Seaspray is noted for its wide expanse of swimming and fishing beach. It has an impact on any traveller. The sheer vastness and the untouched beauty of the Ninety Mile Beach, the clean white sands, the sound of waves and a peaceful and tranquil environment, make it for many people the perfect holiday destination.

At the turn of the century Seaspray consisted of fishermen’s huts and tents. In 1905, a community hall was built to meet the needs of an expanding community. In 1915, the first government survey established 79 blocks followed by another survey in 1927 establishing the township of Seaspray.

In the early 1900’s, the man widely recognised as the founder of Seaspray, James McLachlan, recognised the potential of the area. He had a vision of the area becoming a recreational and health resort. Seaspray is still seen as a holiday resort, catering to casual and seasonal visitors.

Seaspray provides numerous recreational opportunities for both residents and visitors. Visitor facilities in Seaspray include a caravan park and camping area, great swimming and surf fishing opportunties, picnic and BBQ areas, public toilets and showers, and numerous walking tracks.

The Seaspray foreshore reserve extends approximately 2.4km from the mouth of Merrimans Creek to the border of the Gippsland Lakes Coastal Park, and includes the Seaspray Caravan Park. Reserve areas including parkland, a Hall and tennis courts. The Seaspray foreshore and reserves are managed by the Seaspray Reserves Committee of Management.

There are 320 freehold allotments in the township with 244 houses of which 65 are permanently occupied. The permanent population of Seaspray is about 220. The age profile shows Seaspray has a relative high proportion of persons over 60 years.

The vision of the Committee of Management is that Seaspray will be considered a pleasurable area providing opportunities for relaxation, recreational activities, and appreciation of the natural coastal environment. Seaspray prides itself on its high quality recreational fishing along the beach and in Merrimans Creek.

Dunes and surrounding areas will be stabilised and re-established with natural vegetation, enhancing the visual qualities and the biodiversity of the area. Formalised pedestrian, vehicle access and parking will be developed to ensure visitor and resident safety, as well as minimising impact on conservation values.

Appropriate signage and other forms of interpretation media combined with the establishment of walking tracks and viewing platforms will be constructed to preserve and enhance the recreational values of the area.

The Seaspray Surf Lifesaving Club continues to play a valuable role in the safety of the local community and visitors, as well as helping to support the area’s natural environment and low-impact recreational opportunities.
